WEATHER & SOURCES

A little context behind the numbers.

Climate helps you compare destinations. It cannot tell you the weather on a particular afternoon.

Weather for a representative location.

Listing cards use the same reference weather values as each destination guide. Sources include official station climate normals and historical reanalysis averages. Stations, periods and wet-day thresholds differ between places; each guide identifies its source, period and method. These are broad comparisons, not forecasts or a single uniform weather dataset.

Where reanalysis is used, ERA5 data from Copernicus/ECMWF is accessed through Open-Meteo. Official station sources are linked in the relevant guides.

What the weather figures mean.

Daytime and nighttime temperatures

Typical average daily maximum and minimum temperatures, rounded for the cards. A station represents its surroundings; nearby beaches, higher ground and other neighbourhoods can differ.

Wet days

The average number of days meeting the source’s rainfall threshold. Definitions can differ (for example, at least 0.1 mm or at least 1 mm in a day). Check the guide’s threshold before comparing places; a wet day does not necessarily mean rain all day.

Sunshine hours

The arithmetic mean of modelled daily sunshine duration, converted from seconds to hours and rounded to one decimal. It is not daylight duration.

Sea temperature

Not supplied in this dataset. Sea temperatures are deliberately left blank. Where a figure is unavailable, we show “Not listed”.

A place, not an entire country.

One reference coordinate represents a town or resort area, not an entire country, island or mountain range. ERA5 uses a grid of approximately 25 km; local coastlines, elevation and exposure can differ.

Our monthly picks.

Excellent, good and mixed are editorial assessments for the stated type of trip. They are not model-generated review scores or guarantees of weather.

The three cost levels are Lower cost, Moderate and Higher cost. One, two or three blue markers show the level, with the remaining markers shown in a lighter shade. These are relative editorial estimates for accommodation and food, excluding flights. They are not quoted prices or guarantees for a particular date. Compare current booking prices before choosing.

Read the destination's sources.

Each guide links to destination information and its historical weather source data. Use these links to check local details before planning your trip.

Check your exact dates.

Before booking, check current forecasts, local advice, opening dates and travel-provider terms. Festival schedules, school holidays and maintenance can change what is open and what a stay costs.
